How to remove EXIF metadata

Exactly what each option removes

  • Location: the entire GPS section of the EXIF data, including coordinates, altitude and GPS time, plus GPS properties in a standard XMP packet.
  • Camera details: make, model, lens make, lens model and lens specification, body and lens serial numbers, camera owner name, the software and host computer that wrote the file, and the manufacturer's maker note.
  • Timestamps: the date and time the photo was taken, digitised and modified, their time-zone offsets and sub-second values, and the GPS date and time. In PNG files the modification time and Creation Time text are removed as well.

What is deliberately kept

Orientation, resolution, colour space, colour profile and exposure settings stay, because they affect how the photo is displayed rather than who took it or where. Metadata the tool does not classify, such as IPTC captions and copyright fields or other PNG text, is passed through unchanged.

Nothing is decoded or re-encoded. The compressed image data is copied from your file byte for byte, so quality, dimensions and file format are exactly the same, and only the metadata blocks are rewritten.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing EXIF data change the image pixels?

No. The JPEG scan data, WebP image chunks and PNG image data are copied without being decoded. Only the metadata containers are rewritten, so there is no quality loss at all.

Does removing metadata affect photo orientation?

No. The orientation tag is kept on purpose, so a portrait photo still displays upright after cleaning.

Which metadata can be removed?

GPS location, camera and lens details including serial numbers, and date and time information. Each group has its own switch, so you can remove location but keep the date, for example.

Is the location shown to me before removing it?

No. The tool only reports which groups it found, such as location or camera details. It never reads out or displays the values themselves.

What if a photo has no metadata?

If none of the selected groups is present, the original file is returned unchanged and the result says that nothing was removed.

Do other image tools remove EXIF too?

Converting, compressing, resizing or cropping re-encodes the image, which drops EXIF data along the way but also re-compresses the picture. Use this tool when you want to keep the image exactly as it is.
